Guided by CFP® Principles for 30-Plus Years

Financial Planning

The idiom, Time flies when you’re having fun, was first recorded circa 1800. More than two centuries later, it is still true, at least for me. I recently realized that 31 years ago I became a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM (CFP®), and I continue to love what I do as much (or more) than I did in 1987 when I crammed for those comprehensive industry exams.

The process was a lengthy one. We studied for three years and took a series of six written tests over a period of two years (three per year). Topics included Taxes, Insurance, Investments and Estate Planning. Our voluminous text book prepared us to skillfully complete multiple choice questions and write meaningful essays.

I’ll never forget the day my letter arrived with the good news. I passed! I was qualified to practice as a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM. I couldn’t wait to have business cards made showing my new designation. I was not merely Peter K. Hoover. I was Peter K. Hoover, CFP®!

At the time, there were only a few more than 1,200 other CFP® professionals in the United States. Today, the roster of CFP®‘s has soared to more than 80,960! I’m proud to be among these capable industry representatives. Five others are current members of HFA’s staff and three employees are also in the process of studying for upcoming exams.

Perhaps what is most gratifying for me are the CFP® guiding principles that allow me to be a fiduciary working in our clients’ best interests. HFA emulates these tenets as it conducts its business in concert with the CFP Board’s code of ethics. Although, our firm offers ancillary services, it is first and foremost ensconced in financial planning.

As a client, you share the benefits of HFA’s commitment to the CFP Board’s mission. You are assured our team is responsible to no one but you. Your trust is of the utmost value to all of us. This is what I firmly believed the day I began practicing financial planning. The importance of the CFP Board’s philosophy and ethics is even stronger today. It is the core of Hoover Financial Advisors and all it stands for. HFA will continue to follow the CFP Board’s principles to merit your continuing trust. That is what the CFP® designation is all about. That is what HFA is all about.
